Statement to current and prospective applicants on COVID-19
Dear current and prospective applicants of the MD Program at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto:
March 26, 2020
Over the last few weeks, we have all witnessed and have been impacted by the rapidly evolving responses in our global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. First and foremost, all of us here in the UME Enrolment Services office wish you and your loved ones well.
We recently learned that many programs across Canada have introduced various accommodation plans to support current students during this time. Some of these plans include offering unlimited number of credit/no credit (pass/fail) grades for your winter 2020 term, standardized final grade, and changes in the weighting of course components. Whatever the options that were provided to you are, we’re confident that your programs and faculty have worked around the clock to present the best options for you – our students and future leaders.
While this news provides important support to our students across Canada, we recognize that the detour from the anticipated outcomes from the winter 2020 term could be a concern for many. We, here in the MD Program at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, want to assure all of our current and future applicants that the medical schools across Canada will work very closely together to ensure that you are not disadvantaged by the circumstances created by this pandemic, which are beyond your control.
For current cycle applicants who will be admitted to our program in May, we realize that your progress in your undergraduate and/or graduate program may be affected, making it difficult for you to complete your degree requirements by our June 30, 2020 deadline. Please note that although we will try our best to provide feasible offer conditions, you are also welcome to contact our admissions team to share your individual circumstance and to go over all of the options you may consider.
For our prospective applicants, we will make best efforts to provide a comprehensive academic accommodation plan for this winter and potentially summer 2020 term – whether it be related to your courseload, grades, degree progress, or MCAT – by working with our medical school colleagues all across Canada. We hope to follow up with you soon to share a plan that incorporates various circumstances.
We promise that we will prioritize your future at all times.
Finally, we are mindful of the challenges that each and every one of you are undergoing as we navigate through our new realities. A reminder to keep checking our webpage and Facebook for the latest updates on the MD admissions process. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us at email@example.com.
We also want to thank all of our applicants, medical student volunteers, and raters who continue to support our process. Please be well and safe. This is an unprecedented time, but we will get through this together as a community.
