Post Application: I pressed Submit. Now what?

Dec 7, 2018
MD Students walking towards University College

You poured countless hours over fitting your wealth of experiences under the 250-word limit. You spent numerous nights perfecting your personal essays and worrying about your transcripts getting to OMSAS on-time. You performed spellchecks over and over again, making learning the Patronus spell seem like a walk in the park. Finally… you uploaded everything on OMSAS, pressed submit and made a sigh of relief.

Congratulations on completing one of the most challenging steps in your pursuit of a career in medicine.

But wait, there’s more! (Anyone catch this reference?)

Now that you have submitted your application, here are a few FAQs as you progress through the admissions cycle.

How will I know if you have received my documents?

If you see that your documents have been uploaded onto OMSAS, this means you have successfully submitted them. You may also contact OMSAS directly to confirm they have received your application package.

Here at UofT, we simply cannot confirm with individual applicants regarding our receipt of their application materials due to the sheer volume of materials we receive every cycle.

When will you call my Verifiers?

Sometime in mid-December, you will receive an email from our admissions team letting you know that they will begin contacting verifiers included on their Autobiographical sketch (ABS) and personal essays in the new year. It is a good idea to ensure that your verifiers are kept in the loop about our procedures and be aware that they may be contacted within the next few months. Please keep in mind that we do not contact all verifiers, so please don’t panic if your verifiers are not contacted.

How long will my File Review take?

If you haven’t heard back yet, don’t worry! Over the next few months, our admissions team will be conducting an in-depth file review of your application in order to determine your interview eligibility. If you are curious as to how your application is assessed, check our link (at the 21st minute).

What about Interviews?

If you haven’t already, take a look at our interview dates for the 2019/2020 cycle.

Interview dates are assigned as file reviews are completed. While we try our best to give as much advance notice as possible, invitations will normally go out approximately 3 weeks prior to your interview date. Sometimes, if there is a last-minute cancellation, we may even contact you two business days prior to the last interview date. (We thank you in advance for your patience!)

Invitations are only sent by email to the address you have provided on OMSAS. If you decide to change your email address via OMSAS, don’t forget to alert the admissions team here at UofT. Sending a simple email that lists the old and new email addresses will do.

Beginning February, make sure you check your email, including the junk mail folder, regularly.

Final Thoughts

Congratulations. You have just reached an important milestone in your career path. Although the waiting game has started, don’t forget to take the time to rest and enjoy what the world has to offer. Maybe you can finally try that restaurant you have been eyeing for the past two months, or go on a weekend trip as a treat to yourself. You deserve this break, but at the same time, stay tuned to our transition blog and look out for new Facebook Live videos. As we progress to the next phase in our admissions process, we promise to keep you informed and share some of the wonderful things to do around Toronto during this festive time!
